Do the THC Numbers Matter?

One of the most commonly asked questions I get as a budtender is “do the THC numbers matter”? To be honest, the THC percentage is handy information to have on the label, but is not an end all/be all when looking for a strong high.

For starters, companies use a variety of different labs to test their products. This creates vast discrepancies between the numbers that actually get printed on the label and what is present in the cannabis. Not to mention, just like an apple from one side of the tree might be more sweet than one picked from the other side; the sample nug sent into the lab isn’t a true representation of 100% of the rest of the cannabis plant.

One aspect I encourage and show most of my customers are brands we carry such as Fire Bros, Skord, Royal Tree Gardens, and Mad Mark where the bud looks absolutely amazing, but generally comes back testing with lower numbers, usually much less than the 30% THC you can occasionally find around recreational cannabis stores. I encourage my customers to put it to the test by buying an eighth of Skord and then buying a gram of our highest THC flower. I’ll tell them for the first high of the day on a clean palate try one of the buds and the next day try the other. I guarantee you that when you try the higher quality company with lower numbers, you will get more stoned than when you smoke the lower quality company that has higher THC numbers on their label.

This is because there are many others factors that drive a cannabis high other than just THC percentage; terpenes being one of them along with the other 100+ cannabinoids found in cannabis flower. Recreational Cannabis Sales Begin in L.A.

Three weeks after recreational cannabis sales officially became legal in California, select Los Angeles businesses were allowed to open their doors for commercial sales. While the Adult Use of Marijuana Act made recreational sales legal in the state Jan. 1, it is still up to city and county governments to decide for themselves whether they will issue a ban or set up their own guidelines and regulations. Implementation of guidelines takes time, and some cities, Los Angeles included, were not able to get them in place before the rollout at the beginning of the year.

Los Angeles City Council approved commercial marijuana sales early in December, and by mid-January about two dozen businesses in the city had been granted temporary permits. Three of those businesses had state approval secured and were able to open for business that week, according to an NBC News report. More regulations will have to be met down the road to achieve legal status permanently, the Los Angeles Department of Cannabis Regulation told NBC.While this was happy news for the city, the delay was frustrating to some dispensaries, who wanted to follow proper legal channels but felt they were being punished while hundreds of unlicensed operations profited from recreational sales. Not only are these businesses operating without regulation, but they also are not paying taxes, those who have followed procedure complained. Officials in L.A. said they intend to tackle black market sales and shut down unlicensed operations.

Northern California County Rolls Back Marijuana Legalization

As of January 1, California rolled out Proposition 64, The Adult Use of Marijuana Act, making recreational marijuana legal in the state. However, the new law did not automatically make cannabis legal everywhere in California. It is still up to local governments to regulate, restrict, and ban as they see fit or to open the floor to residential votes. Therefore, many Californians have been disappointed to discover their local laws are prohibitive to using, growing, or distributing marijuana.

Even more disappointing, though, is when the law changes in a region that initially legalized marijuana, especially for citizens who have already made significant investments in the cannabis industry.

This is the case in Calaveras County in Northern California, where the board of supervisors voted 3-2 to ban commercial marijuana. The board included four newly elected members who campaigned last year on promises of banning marijuana, according to an article from Associated Press. The decision will have broad-sweeping effects on some 200 cannabis farms that will now have only three months to shut down operations. The growers in Calaveras with permits have already announced an intent to sue the county. Aside from the substantial time and resources used to set up a growing operation, the farms had to each pay a permit cost of $5,000. On top of that, the county has collected a staggering amount of tax revenue from the farms since 2016, totaling more than $7 million to date.

This tax revenue was initially what prompted the county to open the doors to marijuana operations in the first place. The region endured a very harsh wildfire in 2015, which ruined hundreds of homes and businesses. The new income from cannabis was a much needed relief for the devastated county and its 44,000 residents.

It might be alarming to see a region profit so greatly from an industry, then just as quickly dismiss it without concern for the ramifications on those business owners. While some of the marijuana farming taxes was used for additional police and other staff members, the county was not prepared to fully manage the effects of legalization. According to the Associated Press report, Calaveras County is about the size of Rhode Island. It is estimated that on top of the 200 farms with permits, there are more than 1,000 illegal operations. Hundreds more were awaiting a response to permit applications. Obviously such a dramatic infiltration of cannabis farms into the region was alarming to residents, particularly when the vast majority were operating illegally. But the county’s inability to manage illegal operations does not warrant punishing the businesses that have been operating legally since the beginning, particularly when their hard work has so greatly benefited the region.

California Leaders Pushing Back on Washington, D.C. in Battle Over Marijuana Businesses

In 2013, Deputy Attorney General James Cole issued what was known as The Cole Memo, a directive during the Obama administration that told federal officials to back off of prosecuting those selling, distributing, growing, or using marijuana, so long as the offenders were following state laws. The memo was issued to reconcile the federal Controlled Substances Act, 21 U.S.C. Section 812, which classifies marijuana as a Schedule I narcotic, with the wave of state laws that allow cannabis sales and use, either medically or recreationally. The move gave hope to the growing number of Americans in favor of full cannabis legalization nationwide.

However, the U.S. recently took a big step backward when current Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinded the directive, re-opening the door for federal prosecutors to allocate resources at their discretion for cracking down on marijuana operations.

Leaders in states that have legalized marijuana have no intention of going down without a fight, though. With many more making moves to legalize cannabis in state legislatures or on ballots this year, they might have even more allies by their side.In California, leaders are proposing methods to protect the state’s thriving cannabis economy, which has only grown stronger since the Adult Use of Marijuana Act went into effect January 1, 2018. These tactics include writing letters, potential new laws, and federal lawsuits, according to a report from Orange County Register.

Rep. Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana) has called for Congress to refuse to confirm any future appointments to the Justice Department until the administration reverses its current stance on cannabis. He calls the issue a states rights issue, not partisan.

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) said this isn’t just a fight for the status quo, but a chance to move forward. She proposed a bill to permanently block funding for the DOJ and other federal agencies to be used for pursuing states where cannabis is legal. HR 4779 also builds in protections for banks that work with the marijuana industry. Banks currently face massive hurdles in legally being able to work with marijuana businesses due to the illegal status of the companies at the federal level.

Banking with cannabis businesses is also on the mind of Xavier Becerra, attorney general in California, who joined a bipartisan group also pushing for the federal government to ease up off of banks.

A dozen mayors from cities across the country, including Long Beach and San Leandro, joined together to compose a letter to vocalize displeasure in Sessions’ aggressive stance against marijuana, citing the safe and highly regulated systems already in place and pointing out the will of the voters.

Other leaders have said they don’t believe the federal powers have the resources or much interest in targeting operations that are abiding by state laws. While our Orange County marijuana business lawyers hope this is true, we also know that hopes are not enough to protect the people of California and their businesses. It is urgent that representatives continue to fight for the best interests of the voters of California. It is also crucial for marijuana businesses to seek counsel from knowledgeable attorneys like ours, who will guide you and your business through these uncertain times to make sure that you are up to date on the latest laws and agile to changes at the federal level.

Jared Explains Differences Between Concentrate Textures

The increasing popularity of concentrates is explosive, becoming the fastest growing category sold in recreational stores. With so much attention on this specific category of cannabis products, varieties in textures and consistencies is only increasing. Some have been around longer and are more familiar like shatter, but with new products on the market like THCA crystals and distillate, what exactly is the difference between all of these?

The simple and most common answer, aside from which type of extraction method was utilized, is going to boil down to the purge– not to say that’s the case for all textures and types but it’s usually the case. The purge is the point where whatever solvent was used to extract the cannabinoids and other delicious parts of cannabis from the cannabis plant is removed and the product is about to be ready for consumption. Hydrocarbon extracts are the most commonly found types of dabs. The name hydrocarbon extracts refers to an extract created using a hydrocarbon as a solvent; this includes butane, propane, pentane, hexane, or a mix of them. Your favorite shatter, honeycomb, budder, are all made using hydrocarbon extraction. The way the different textures achieved are often the result of what occurs during purging.

Shatter and sugar wax are going to be at the low end of the spectrum for purging, which also means they will be the type most capable of holding on to terpenes and cannabinoids. Wax such as earwax or butter are going to sit more in the middle of the spectrum and bearing a less dense consistency than shatter. At the far end of the scale is crumble and honeycomb, which is often whipped as it’s purged to create a fluffy aesthetic and soft texture, but also the longest purged so with the solvent there tends to be terpenes removed as well.

Distillate is effectively an ultra refined hydrocarbon extract. BHO, for example, heated low at first will burn off the terpenes that give off taste and aroma, up to higher temperatures which burn off cannabinoids that have a lower melting point than THC. The end product is an extract that has had almost everything worked out of it besides everyone’s favorite psychoactive cannabinoid—tetrahydrocannabinol.

Sessions Rolls Back Directive Protecting State Marijuana Laws

It’s no news that U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has strong feelings about the cannabis industry. Since his appointment almost a year ago, he has promised to uphold federal cannabis law, which classifies marijuana as a Schedule I narcotic under Controlled Substances Act, 21 U.S.C. Section 812. This path is in stark contrast with the narrative in the rest of the country: 30 states as well as Washington, D.C., have some form of marijuana legalization on the books. Eight of those states (including California) and the District of Columbia allow recreational marijuana sales and use, with more planning ballot initiatives and legislative votes in 2018.

Up until now, those states have been able to manage their marijuana laws as they saw fit without meddling from the federal government thanks to a directive put in place at the Department of Justice during Barack Obama’s presidency that discouraged enforcement.

However, Sessions recently rescinded that directive, opening the door for prosecutors to go after states that have established legal cannabis. It’s unclear at this point whether prosecutors will actively start enforcement. Sessions described the move as simply him doing his job and enforcing the law. He also said he would leave it up to U.S. attorneys to determine what issues should be their top priority based on their resources. But the U.S. attorney in Colorado has already stated he intends to align practices with Sessions’ latest guidance.

President Trump seems to have flipped on this issue, stating last year that he would leave the issue up to the states, but recently siding with the Attorney General that federal law should be enforced. This has added more unnecessary confusion to citizens who believed this administration would align with the conservative tendency toward states’ rights.

Sessions is already getting pushback. Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner (R) has suggested not confirming nominees to the Justice Department should Sessions continue down this path.

It’s no surprise Congress might fight back considering the growing popularity of marijuana legalization among constituents nationwide, who understand its tremendous benefits. A CBS News poll last year showed 61 percent of Americans support full marijuana legalization. That number increases dramatically to 88 percent when speaking about medical marijuana. More telling, 71 percent of those surveyed are against efforts by the federal government to interfere in states who have passed their own cannabis laws.

Besides personal opinion shifting, there are the enormous economic benefits of marijuana to take into consideration. If prosecutors start filing charges or seizing marijuana-related property, it would have devastating consequences on the local economies and state coffers in regions where the drug is legal.

Evergreen Market Educators

Evergreen Market Educators meet every Tuesday to discuss products, customer service and learn from our vendors.

The Evergreen Market’s Educator program is the first of its kind in the i-502 market.

Educators meet as a unit, sharp every Tuesday at 8am. Starting their day on a positive note, they share wins of the previous week; sometimes it’s discussing inspirational stories with customers and sometimes it’s something more serious like a difficult moment in customer service and how to over come it. This is the time to build each other up, share in their wealth of knowledge and get excited for future moves.

The Educator program was rolled out on 4/20/17. Today they represent roughly three educators per store, insuring there is one on shift daily to assist a customer with deeper questions on products or provide that extra time to guarantee a new customer is comfortable and can ask all the questions or sometimes just have an ear to be heard.

Informational presentations from vendors happen twice a month, every other Tuesday, allowing the team to focus one week on education and another on in-house trainings.

House of Cultivar team came to visit an Educator’s meeting to share their way of cultivation with tissue-culture labs. 

This Tuesday was a special treat with House of Cultivar team presenting about their operations; how tissue-culture works and their plan for world domination.

Recently, House of Cultivar won DOPE’s Industry Award for Best Indoor Grow in 2017. Congratulations!

Co-founder, Jason Hutto started off the meeting as he shared the company mission, helping the team understand who House of Cultivar is and what they stand for. The brand mantra reminds us where the plant comes from and where it is going, sharing their aspirations and vision for the future of cannabis.

A passion that has led them to great success, as seen with the recent win of Dope Industry Award for Best Indoor Grow 2017. Plus, they aren’t afraid to share their secrets. House of Cultivar prides themselves on their incredible library of genetics, where they use the tissue culture process to grow their plants. They are constantly giving others in the i-502 market tours of their facility, even if it may be their “competition.” This is not about hording all the goods, but in sharing the  knowledge they have gained, to continue to raise the cannabis community and industry up.

For this presentation a large focus was on kief; talking about their signature sift, a five-star sift they take great pride in making, that is used for their Goldfingers, prerolls that are hand painted with a distillate that is then covered in kief.

“The more pride we took in making fire sift or the really good distillates, the better they burned!”

As they described the process for making sift, it quickly became evident that its not just a mindless job, but something that is taken seriously at the House of Cultivar facility. With a careful and watchful eye to make sure that, depending on the strain, the process to make the sift may change a little. Using a microscope, staff check the heads on the kief, not just dependent on color but the size of the head of the sift. Usually they use a three-screen sift process, but depending on the strain, sometimes the ripe heads will get stuck on the second screen, where the processing team will then need to refreeze the second screen to see how much they can purify it again.

More States Look to Legalize Marijuana in 2018

While California has been on the forefront of cannabis legalization, making medical marijuana legal more than 20 years ago with the Compassionate Use Act of 1996, and more recently with recreational cannabis being legalized through the Adult Use of Marijuana Act, other states have not been as lucky.

Many hope to change that this coming year, with at least 12 states on deck to consider some form of cannabis legalization in 2018.

This is huge news, not only for those particular states, but also for California and other states that already have legalization in place. The more states rally behind legalization, the stronger we stand against outdated federal laws, which still classify cannabis as a Schedule I narcotic under the Controlled Substances Act, 21 U.S.C. Section 812. According to a recent report from Newsweek, more than 60% of Americans now support full legalization.Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been adamant about his opposition of state legalization, but our California marijuana legalization lawyers in Riverside know that a united voice from the states sends a strong and clear message that we as a country are ready to move forward.

The following states will potentially make moves toward legalization this year, according to the Newsweek report:

•  Vermont: After the state legislature approved recreational marijuana legalization earlier in 2017, the governor said he first wanted to create studies on the effects legalization has had on public health issues. In December, the governor said he was comfortable moving forward. If things go as expected, this would be the first time a state government passed legalization laws rather than through a ballot initiative.
• New Jersey: New Jersey elected a new Democratic governor, who ran on marijuana legalization and promised to sign adult recreational use into law in his first 100 days, assuming the state legislature provides a bill.
• Michigan: Advocates gathered the required amount of signatures, pending confirmation, to get a recreational marijuana measure on the ballot in November.
• Delaware: A task force was assigned to study the impact of the legal marijuana industry. Results are expected back soon to help the state legislature determine how they want to move forward.
• Rhode Island: Rhode Island is eager to make a decision about legalization soon, with other New England States jumping on board. A study is out to help the statehouse determine recommendations, and int he meantime advocates hope to get a bill in place to decriminalize possession of small amounts of cannabis.
• Connecticut: A symbolic vote by the Hartford City Council to legalize recreational marijuana is expected to spark debate at the state level.
• Ohio: The advocacy group that led a failed ballot initiative in 2015 is ramping up for a second try for recreational marijuana in the 2018 election.
• Oklahoma: Medical marijuana will appear be up for a vote by citizens sometime this year.
• Kentucky: Momentum is building in the state government to get a bill through the state legislature legalizing medical marijuana.
• South Dakota: Signatures are under review to put a medical marijuana initiative on the November 2018 ballot.
• Utah: Advocates for medical marijuana are in the midst of collection necessary signatures, which would be due by April to make the cutoff for the November ballot.
• Missouri: Signatures are also being collected in Missouri in hopes of getting a medical marijuana initiative on the ballot in November.

Recreational Marijuana in California Expected to Impact Medical Market

California has in many ways led efforts to legalize marijuana around the country. The state was the first to allow medical marijuana with Proposition 215, i.e. the Compassionate Use Act of 1996. And while the state is a little behind others, such as Colorado, to join the recreational marijuana movement, it will set an example for the rest of the country with Los Angeles expected to skyrocket to the top of the list of the largest commercial markets in the country.

Los Angeles is among cities in California who have approved recreational marijuana activity after the Adult Use of Marijuana Act (or Proposition 64) went into effect Jan. 1, though the city is still finalizing regulations and collecting applications.

This is a fantastic step toward removing the long-held stigmas surrounding cannabis, paving the way toward normalization of marijuana both as a significantly beneficial medical resource, and also as a safe, non-lethal recreational device. Now that both are legal in California, though, be prepared to see a shift in the market.

While many in the state have been seeking more intensive medical marijuana treatment, such as for cancer or PTSD or epilepsy, others have known for a long time that marijuana was a safe alternative to other casual vices, according to an article from the Associated Press. These residents have taken advantage of the numerous pop-up doctor’s offices promising cheap medical marijuana recommendations with few to no questions about the reported ailments of the patients who walk in.

Our Los Angeles marijuana legalization lawyers are glad that these residents will finally be able to have access to cannabis in the way they want to use it without hiding in the shadow of medical use. This move will be beneficial to all, with medical users being able to have their treatments taken more seriously and recreational users being able to function more freely. Plus, the state will profit off of a new stream of revenue, with more consumers and higher tax rates being placed on recreational cannabis than on medical.

However, it will have an impact on those businesses who counted on the overflow of medical users, many of whom might now choose recreational use, forgoing the process of obtaining a recommendation letter from a doctor and a medical marijuana card. This process was put in place because marijuana is still a Schedule I narcotic according to the Controlled Substances Act, 21 U.S.C. Section 812, meaning that a doctor is not allowed to write a traditional prescription.

A study from the university of California Agricultural Issues Center states that, while it is expected to remain a powerhouse industry, medical cannabis revenue could drop from $2 billion to $1.4 billion, while recreational revenue is predicted to be in the ballpark of $5 billion in the next year.

As such, some dispensaries are planning to convert into more traditional marijuana retail establishments with edibles and products for the more casual user. Licensed Cannabis Business Drivers Arrested, Van Confiscated

It is an extremely exciting time now in California for cannabis businesses. While medical marijuana has been legal in the state for nearly two decades, the Adult Use of Marijuana Act, which went into effect Jan. 1, 2018, is ushering in a new era with the legalization of recreational cannabis in California.

But our legal team knows it also can be a very scary and confusing time. Some officials are seeking to make the transition as easy as possible to encourage cannabis businesses to become public and legal. While others seem to be looking for reasons to crack down on businesses and exploit clashing laws.

Such is the case in northern California’s Mendocino County, where in late December two delivery workers were arrested, and their van and its contents, roughly a ton of marijuana, was confiscated.It is clear from this case that the employees, and the company they worked for, had made every effort to be in compliance with relevant marijuana laws. In fact there is even disagreement among officials if the company was in violation of any local or state ordinances. Still, the two were cited for unlawful possession of marijuana for sale and unlawful transportation.

There is a real concern the marijuana in the van, which accounts for an entire year’s crop for a local family farm, could be destroyed, ruining the livelihood for many involved as well as harming those counting on the delivery of the product.

We specialize in defending clients against all criminal marijuana offenses, including possession for sale and transportation. But we also will help you review your business plans ahead of time to make sure you are following all state and local laws, solidifying your defense should you have a run in with authorities.

In the case at hand, the employees had with them a county license, which the company had been granted the week before, permitting it to transport within the county. California Highway Patrol said that wasn’t enough, claiming they also needed a state permit, and that those permits wouldn’t have been valid until Jan. 1.

A county spokesperson backed the company, stating the distribution license made them in compliance.

The highway patrol said that the van (which was unmarked) was not pulled over in an attempt to target the company, but over a traffic violation, claiming safety is their primary goal and they are always on the lookout for signs that a driver could be under the influence.

Still, as businesses try to figure out an array of complicated regulations that have been put in place in the past year, such incidents do not inspire confidence. Not only does the state have its own set of rules, but cities and counties were given the power to create their own guidelines or choose to ban activity altogether. This is all on top of the constant fear that the federal government will turn its focus on rolling back state legalization efforts.

Despite Statewide Marijuana Legalization, Californians Must Follow Local Laws

With the state of California transitioning to legal recreational cannabis, it is a very exciting time for marijuana business entrepreneurs.

Many in California have been in the marijuana industry for years on the medical side of things. California was the first state to legalize medical marijuana with the Compassionate Use Act of 1996, also known as Proposition 215.

Still, with the passing of Proposition 64, allowing adult use of recreational marijuana Jan. 1, and its steady rollout in areas of California, many new businesses have been eager to join the marketplace. Sometimes too eager.In Ventura County, two men were recently arrested on allegations of running an illegal marijuana dispensary. Marijuana was allegedly being peddled out of a smoke shop in Port Hueneme owned by one of the suspects. Police claim a nearby post-traumatic stress counseling facility was being used for storage.

According to city police, eight pounds of marijuana and $2,000 were confiscated from the premises.

In an ironic twist of fate, just 10 days after the arrests, the Port Hueneme City Council passed an ordinance that would make it legal to operate medical and recreational marijuana dispensaries in the city.

Cities in California have the right to determine whether they will participate in statewide legalization efforts, with some like Port Hueneme joining later than others. This has caused confusion and a restlessness among some marijuana business owners who are sometimes willing to take great risks to join in the burgeoning marketplace, regardless of local laws.

The ordinance in Port Hueneme of course would not have made any dispensary immediately legal, so it would not have been helpful to the suspects in this case. It still would be mandatory to obtain the proper licenses from the city as well as the state and to be in compliance with all regulations. But it is one step closer to making it legal to sell and obtain marijuana in regions where there is clearly a demand.

Border Patrol Won’t Recognize Marijuana Legalization

While many residents of California have been celebrating recreational marijuana legalization after the Adult Use of Marijuana Act went into effect Jan. 1, 2018, some might be caught off guard if they are stopped even with a small amount of cannabis at Border Patrol checkpoints in the state.

Representatives from the Border Patrol recently told the Associated Press that nothing has changed as far as their job is concerned. They intend to continue to uphold federal law at the eight California checkpoint locations, just as they have since medical marijuana was legalized in the state. The federal Controlled Substances Act, 21 U.S.C. Section 812 still classifies marijuana as a Schedule I narcotic, on par with heroin.

Many states have fought this classification, citing the health benefits the drug provides and the fact that marijuana is not lethal. This has led to a wave of medical and recreational legalization in many states, but U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been very vocal about his opposition to those efforts.

Therefore, those in charge of monitoring checkpoints will be adhering to federal directives for the foreseeable future. The Border Patrol has checkpoints within 100 miles of the Mexican border, created with the intention of curbing illegal immigration and drug smuggling.

However, roughly 40% of marijuana seizures at these checkpoints come from U.S. citizens carrying less than an ounce, according to data from 2013-2016. This means they would be in adherence to current California law and are still being punished.

Because Border Patrol officials can question drivers without cause and are not required a search warrant, they have a great deal of power at these checkpoints. Simply looking nervous can reportedly be enough to cause officers to pull a driver aside. Drug-sniffing dogs are often used to alert officers to marijuana and can detect even tiny quantities. And obvious attempts to avoid the checkpoint will almost certainly garner the suspicion of officers.

While we acknowledge that operatives within Customs and Border Protection have stated that U.S. citizens with small amounts of cannabis are generally not charged, we strongly stand against the continued practice of seizing drugs and photographing and fingerprinting motorists, particularly those adhering to state laws.

In addition, the checkpoints are considered a nuisance to local residents, who get delayed in backups due to searches, some reportedly lasting up to four miles in the San Diego area. Residents also complain that they must deal with people cutting through their neighborhoods trying to avoid the checkpoints. They also are considered a privacy violation, with some residents refusing to cooperate at the stops.

Officials claim the practice curbs a significant amount of immigration and smuggling issues, with 34 established checkpoints along the Mexico border and 103 makeshift strategically shifting locations meant to protect major routes into the cities. But for those who endure the burdens of these searches, the benefits are less clear.

Colorado Authorities Shut Down 26 Cannabis Businesses

Marijuana has become legal in many states across the country, for both medical and recreational use. California is the latest states to pave the way for recreational cannabis businesses through the Adult Use of Marijuana Act, which went into effect Jan. 1, 2018.

But just because a state has legalized cannabis does not mean there is a marijuana free-for-all with no rules or consequences.

For example, Colorado voters passed Amendment 64 in 2012, allowing for personal recreational use of marijuana for adults over 21. Sales began in the state in 2014. But recently 26 legal cannabis businesses were shut down by authorities in Denver.

All of the operations were either store fronts or growing facilities operating under the Sweet Leaf name. While the operations were licensed and legal, they had been under investigation for the past year on suspicion the businesses were exceeding individual sales limits set by the state. Colorado regulations restrict possession to one ounce or less of marijuana per adult.

Police said they were monitoring eight of the 26 sites for the past year. The investigation culminated in a raid of the targeted locations and suspension of all related operations in the state under the same name. The company owns one location in Oregon which was not affected by the raid.

Authorities arrested 12 people in connection with the case. During the ordered shut down, the businesses will not be allowed to sell or produce any cannabis products. In the meantime, the investigation is ongoing and the city scheduled public hearings until the matter is sorted out.

This is the first time Colorado marijuana businesses have been raided since legalization, according to a report from the Associated Press. The state, including Governor John Hickenlooper, has been vocal about protecting its cannabis industry from federal meddling. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made it no secret that he does not approve of state cannabis legalization, and wants to uphold marijuana’s standing as a Schedule I narcotic on the Controlled Substances Act, 21 U.S.C. 

However, such protections do not extend to businesses who are suspected of violating the state and local regulations.

It may be tempting to cut corners to secure higher profits, but such actions can be much more costly in the end.

Interviewing Educator Mike Rhode at The Evergreen Market

Educator Mike Rhode’s first love was flower, but upon moving to the PNW- terpy dabs have quickly become the favorite.

Mike Rhode didn’t end up in the cannabis industry by accident.

This time last year, Mike was in the middle of making the biggest change of his life. He dropped everything and hit the road to cross the country and come to Washington state, intent on becoming a part of the booming industry surrounding his favorite plant– cannabis.

“When Colorado and Washington legalized I was still in high school at the time, but it was a huge wake up call. I knew I wanted to be a part of that. I love smoking weed.”

It was a risk that Mike would undoubtedly say paid off, but nothing was guaranteed when he arrived to the PNW. “I called up my best friend and said ‘hey, wanna move to a state where weed is legal?’” When Mike got here he ended up working at a local hotel for three months before landing his foot in the door at The Evergreen Market. “I went to The Evergreen Market regularly, naturally it became my first choice to work at. Another employee encouraged me to apply, so I did.”

Just like many modern stoners, Mike’s infatuation with flower was quickly replaced by concentrates. New York Mike is a dabber through and through.

“Oil over flower. I love to dab it, pens are okay, carts are fine– but nothing beats a fat glob on a hot nail straight to the face.”

He credits the convenience and flavor to his preference. “I’m a busy guy.” Mike said referencing the speedy effects that a big dab has versus sitting and burning a bowl or a joint. Specifically terp sauce is where it’s at for him, and coincidentally also a trend we’re seeing industry-wide. The more that terpenes become common knowledge, the more we might see the focus shift off of what is the highest THC percentage to what is really packing those rich essential oils that dictate taste and aroma. It’s those specific characteristics that land Tangie as Mike’s favorite strain. When talking about why Tangie is number one for him, he said, “the mental stimulation and the flower having a specific flavor profile, there’s nothing compared to the taste of real Tangie.”

Tangie is Mike’s favorite. “The strain has the most orange-y, tangerine taste and smell.”

Mike doesn’t smoke strictly Tangie, of course. He also cites Strawberry Cough as another favorite for a different reason. His favorite strain for a particular outside of work activity. “Strawberry Cough and small shows like the ones in bars. I go to Ballard a lot, Tractor Tavern next to Hattie’s Hat is a great dive.” Mike uses going to shows as a way to get out of the house. Not all stoners just stick to their couch. “Strawberry Cough is that classic sativa buzz I want for being out and awake. The music sets can be kinda long. I’m anxious a lot, but Strawberry Cough makes me very social. I’ll go to concerts by myself to step out of my comfort zone and even if I don’t talk to anyone, it allows me to get out and be social. Anxiety is a really bad friend that tells you a lot of lies and some Strawberry Cough while going to a show really helps me with that.”

New York Mike hasn’t had any trouble fitting in with the Evergreen State, but if you ask him about his favorite munchies you see that you never really leave where you come from behind. “A good slice of pizza. A classic New York slice. Pepperoni, that’s all you need. Foldable. Portable. You can eat it anywhere and get it for $1.80/ slice. And if you’re gonna dip it in anything it’s bleu cheese, not ranch.”

Of course, Mike hopes to see full legalization hit his home state, but dreaming even bigger than that he hopes to specifically see The Evergreen Market come to the East Coast. “I don’t necessarily want to see Evergreen pop up in big cities, but instead in places like where I’m from. My dream for TEM is to break ground in my hometown. I love Washington, I’ve been told I’ve got the PNW vibe, but you never forget where you come from. Maybe my teachers and parents didn’t teach me how to dab, but they really gave me the tools and skills to make this all possible. I want to go back, and give back, and I would really like to do that with Evergreen.”

As a matter of fact, Mike is all about his second home with Evergreen Market. When asked if he has any mentors or role models within i502 he highlighted everybody he shares this company with. “Everyone at The Evergreen Market. Not just at the upper levels either, I don’t know if it’s a secret or anything but the industry turnover rate is pretty high and the people that stick with us are in it for real. Some people think we might lose something by going mainstream, but everyone that’s here is really different and set for normalizing cannabis. The convergence of three great minds creating something like this is amazing.”

“Great minds attract successful, driven people and I like seeing those people create something fruitful.”

A point that came up in a recent educator meeting was just what New York Mike referenced within his answer– the hesitancy of cannabis becoming mainstream. A perspective-checking counterpoint came from Eric Gaston, one of The Evergreen Market founders. Eric made the statement, “If you love cannabis, and see what this plant can do why wouldn’t you want everyone to be smoking? I think the world might be a better place if everyone smoked cannabis.” Mike Rhode lives this sentiment even when he’s not at work. “I’m not a keyboard warrior or anything, but I like to stop the spread of misinformation so I’ll talk about cannabis off the clock. I like talking to people about weed to get them aware and excited, mostly excited. I wear the Evergreen shirts and rep it everywhere, I love it.”

The educator position was a natural fit for Mike who was already championing cannabis before he was even aware of what the educator position entailed. “After talking to Vaughn and Dillon I really got the grasp of what it meant to be an educator. I wanted more responsibility within the industry for myself, but also for the customers. I wanted to be a reassuring voice, not necessarily someone that knows better but can guide and direct and make sure the cannabis experience isn’t scary.”

The passion for the plant coupled with the enthusiasm for people who come into our stores is what makes Mike a natural asset. When asked about what the most eye-opening experience as an educator has been his answer speaks directly to the connection with the customer. “Someone who hasn’t really experienced cannabis before for example, or hasn’t smoked it in a long time, maybe they’re trying it ‘cause it’s legal now. I get excited about people that are excited about cannabis. I will guide them with a smile on my face, not to devalue the people that come in and want their daily $40 sack, but the people that are like ‘wow, cool, amazing. What can you tell me about this?’ The answer is how much time you got? Cause I’ve got all the time in the world.”
